Mother Health International: UNICEF reports that Haiti has the highest rates of infant, under-five, and maternal mortality in the Western Hemisphere. MHI worked for three years to offer pre-and postpartum care to the women of Jacmel, Haiti. Then the 2010 earthquake and its displacement of families/medical centers resulted in a need for a new birth center in Jacmel. Soley Lavi (“Life’s Sun Birth Center”) was born. The center is currently utilized as a pregnancy resource center and outreach program for surrounding villages and midwives who serve them. In partnership with Direct Relief International, Soley Lavi continues to support the work of traditional midwives in the area by providing comprehensive education and supplies.
