Mother Health International: ‘Kassoumay’ means ‘Peace’ in the Diola language. Kafountine is a fishing village on the coast of southern Senegal. A group of women in a neighborhood known as Kabar have founded an informal women’s society that assists births. Culturally, childbirth is viewed as sacred and something that cannot be done in the presence of men. The Kassoumay Birth Center was built to provide a safe, warm, and clean space for women to give birth, while being assisted by traditional midwives. It is based on MHI’s care model.
